This year, I’ve been rocking braids more than I have in a very long time.  I love braids because it’s low maintenance and goes with all my outfits. I’ve realized that my scalp itches like crazy when I get braids, it feels like my scalp is on fire. This is so strange to me because I spent my childhood up until high school constantly getting my hair braided and never encountered this issue.  A friend told me that I was probably reacting to the synthetic hair and explained what was going on.  Synthetic hair works best with braids because it’s not slippery and stays in place. There is a chemical used to coat synthetic hair that are used for braids. This chemical  is what makes the hair heat resistant and can cause irritations when it rubs against hair and scalp. She suggested an oil that could help ease the itching and that’s what has been helping me.

How to stop the itching

  1. Curls blueberry mint tea scalp treatment: This doesn’t stop the itching but it sure helps, it’s recommended to use before and after braiding hair. I always use after- would use before getting my hair braided next time and see if that makes any difference. Apply directly to entire scalp and distribute evenly. I still find myself patting my hair after using this oil but when I don’t scratch, I see results within 2-4 days. I love how it leaves a cooling feeling on the scalp and it definitely helps relieve itching.
  2. Apple cider vinegar bath: I’ve never tried this because my braider provides my hair but I’ve heard good things about this method. You’re meant to mix apple cider vinegar with warm water and let the hair soak inside for 30 minutes to an hour. After you see the a white substance (aka the chemical) floating, rinse hair thoroughly with water or shampoo  and leave to dry. If you have any questions, google or leave comment below. If you have any other methods please let me know.

I really hope this helps anyone that currently has issues with itching after getting braids.
